چکیده

The objective of this study is to determine the tyrosinase inhibition and antibacterial activities against the pathogenic bacteria in the oral cavity of the mangosteen pericarp extract. The results showed that the mangosteen pericarp extract inhibited the tyrosinase enzyme at IC50 = 67 ng/ml. Furthermore, the mangosteen pericarp extract also exhibited the antibacterial activities against the pathogenic bacteria in the oral cavity, Streptococcus mutans DMST18777, Porphyromonas gingivalis DMST2136, and Streptococcus pyogenes DMST17020 at minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) of 0.01 mg/ml, and Staphylococcus aureus ATCC25923 at MIC of 0.1 mg/ml by agar dilution method.

Potency of Mangosteen Pericarp Extract to Inhibit 38-kDa and Ag85 Protein Secretion by Mycobacterium tuberculosis H37Rv

Tuberculosis (TB) is an infectious disease caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis. The α-mangostin in mangosteen pericarp extract can inhibit M. tuberculosis growth. This study examined the potency of α-mangostin in mangosteen pericarp extract to inhibit 38-kDa and Ag85 protein secretion from M. tuberculosis H37Rv. The samples used in this study were divided into three independent variable groups...

Antioxidant-Enhancing Property of the Polar Fraction of Mangosteen Pericarp Extract and Evaluation of Its Safety in Humans

Crude extract from the pericarp of the mangosteen (mangosteen extract [ME]) has exhibited several medicinal properties in both animal models and human cell lines. Interestingly, the cytotoxic activities were always observed in nonpolar fraction of the extract whereas the potent antioxidant was often found in polar fraction. Although it has been demonstrated that the polar fraction of ME exhibit...

Biological Activities and Bioavailability of Mangosteen Xanthones: A Critical Review of the Current Evidence

Mangosteen (Garcinia mangostana L.) is a tropical tree native to Southeast Asia that produces a fruit whose pericarp contains a family of tricyclic isoprenylated polyphenols referred to as xanthones. Numerous in vitro studies have shown that these xanthones possess anti-oxidant, anti-proliferative, pro-apoptotic, anti-inflammatory and anti-carcinogenic activities. Aggressive marketing of such h...

Vasa vasorum anti-angiogenesis through H2O2, HIF-1α, NF-κB, and iNOS inhibition by mangosteen pericarp ethanolic extract (Garcinia mangostana Linn) in hypercholesterol-diet-given Rattus norvegicus Wistar strain

BACKGROUND Oxidative stress in atherosclerosis produces H2O2 and triggers the activation of nuclear factor kappa beta (NF-κB) and increase of inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS). The formation of vasa vasorum occurs in atherosclerosis. Vasa vasorum angiogenesis is mediated by VEGFR-1 and upregulated by hypoxia-inducible factor-1α (HIF-1α). The newly formed vasa vasorum are fragile and immatu...
